Big Buddha Wat Pattaya, Thailand

Wow, yesterday when I posted the Photo Of The Day on the Big Buddha Wat that I visited in Pattaya, I did not anticipate that many readers would be waiting for the full photo series of the Buddha temple.

The Big Buddha Wat (Temple) in Pattaya is just one of the Big Buddhas that can be found here in Thailand, there are versions of this at Koh Samui, Bangkok and so on. The Big Buddha Wat Pattaya is a place where the Thais visit to pay homage to Buddha.  The temple is better known as Wat Phra Yai by the locals and there is no entrance fees at all.

Along the way up to the stairway to the temple, there will be a few people offering caged birds and for a low price (I’m not too sure how much, but they said however much that you would like to contribute) and you’ll get the opportunity to release the bird at the Big Buddha which is considered a good deed. As you reach the peak, you can also take the Gold Strips that are made available and in return offer a donation to stick those gold strips at the base of the Big Buddha.

Wat Phra Yai basically translates to Big Buddha Hill, and as the name suggest, the Big Buddha is located on a tall hill at one end of Pattaya. So from a distant, you can actually see the Buddha statue. The Big Biddha at the Big Buddha Hill was created in 1977 and is estimated to be 300 meters in height.

All around the Big Buddha at the top of the hill, are images of other Buddha in his other forms. There is also a hall called the Pavilion Hall where I believed is used for prayers. Visitors can also burn Incense sticks to pay respect and do their prayers for Buddha. The hill later I found out was known as the Pattaya Hill.
