Brinchang Cameron Highlands Night Market (Pasar Malam)
Some who travel to Cameron Highlands tell me that they are quite bored there with nothing much to do. I find that totally wrong and there are tons of things that you can do there. You don’t get to do extreme activities like bungee jumping or rollercoaster riding, but the experience here in Cameron Highlands is rather more towards nature. You get to visit Strawberry Farms to pluck your own fruits, you get to act out Bollywood movie scenes at the Bharat Tea Plantation, you get to eat delicious local delicacies, you get to enjoy the cold winter weather, you get to do jungle tracking, camping and many more.
Another interesting thing that you must visit at Cameron Highlands is their weekend night market, or more know in Malay as pasar malam. The famous night market there is simply known as Brinchang Night Market and as the name suggest it’s located at Brinchang. It’s located just opposite the Police Quarters so it’s quite easy to detect. Parking can be a pain here because it will be flooded with people. I suggest that if you don’t mind walking, park your car a few meters away from the night market and walk up.
From what we asked the sellers, they are open on Friday and Saturday night, but on sundays, they are open in the morning instead. During Malaysian school holidays, they are open everyday from 6pm till 11pm. The market itself is not that huge, you’ll probably need to walk only 1 kilometere to cover the whole area.
Brinchang Cameron Highlands night market is divided into 2 main sections. One section is for fresh fruits and vegetables, and one more section opposite the road is for freshly cooked food. In between the 2 section you’ll get to buy clothes and garments as well as other souvenir items. What I love particularly here is their fresh sweet corns, you can practically eat them without the need to cook. Same as the strawberries, but do keep in mind that they do not last long, if you plan to buy them for someone back home, make sure you consume them within 1 or 2 days time because they tend to spoil easily.
Some of the food that you should try there are their Fried Mushroom which taste really good, also try their Barbecue Chicken (Ayam Pusing). Pricing are quite cheap here when compared to other parts of Malaysia. Cameron Highlands are also famous for their purple skin sweet potatoes which are also available here and they steam them for you straight away. Cactus plants are also widely available at the Brinchang Night Market, but I recommend that you buy the at Cactus Point instead.
