Roadtrip: Kellie’s Castle, Batu Gajah

Continuation of our Perak and Pahang Roadtrip. Our next stop after visiting Sekinchan Town was Kellie’s Castle, which is located in Batu Gajah.

From Sekinchan, it took us about 1 hour to Teluk Intan area. You will have to pass Teluk Intan before being able to see the Batu Gajah signs. We had a few stops asking people for direction, and they were very helpful in guiding us. Frankly without asking around, we would be lost.

Kellie’s Castle is only open till 6pm in the evening. We got there at 5.55pm. Thank god they allowed us to purchase the tickets (which cost RM4 per person, it’s slightly higher for overseas tourist). My first impression of this place was that I was marvellous. I was wondering why didnt Kellie complete his castle.

Our first stop was at the main entrance of Kellie’s Castle, where we took some photographs. Next a tree that was named Bear Tree. When you go near this tree, you will see a bear shaped face appearing out of it. Very unique.

This whole place is quite suitable for photography, there are many antique designs and material that you can take photos with.

Now, what did I know about Kellie’s Castle. It was said that there was something in this castle that didn’t allow workers to complete it. Everytime they nearly complete the castle, something weird happens and workers die. Kellie was said to have passed away in Portugal somewhere in the 1920s. They also mentioned that his soul still roams around his castle along the corridors. I also read that there was a secret undergroud tunnel that lead to a temple that is nearly 2kilometers away. Me and a friend (Robin) tried looking for this passageway but was to no avail. It was sealed for safaty purpose and to avoid people from getting into. Researchers should go and investigate whether this is true. Anyway, the following write up about Kellie’s Castle is derived from Wikipedia:

Kellie’s Castle (sometimes also called Kellie’s Folly) is located near Batu Gajah, and is about 20 minutes’ drive from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie Smith. According to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or a home for his son.

Kellie Smith’s wife, namely Agnes had problems conceiving and after praying to one of Hindu’s goddess, namely Amman. His wish was granted (This is according to some believe, not sure how true). Because of this, Kellie wanted his statue to be made beside Amman. Today there is a temple few kilometers away and kellies statue can be seen at the roof top of the temple. That’s all I know from aunties and uncles who talk about that ancient place.

When I was at Kellie’s Castle, I did not at all feel any spoky things happening. We just minded our own business and took all the photography we could. We were in there till nearly 7pm, how kind of them to leave the place open an hour late. I felt that the roof tops should be covered with railings to avoid people from falling down. Small kids were walking at corners of the rooftop, which is very dangerous. I’ll stop with the write up now and do enjoy the photographs.
