Diwali Celebration 2010

Diwali, which is also known as Deepavali in Malaysia is celebrated by Indians all over the world. And as an Indian, I was shocked that I was not able to answer my friends question when she asked “What is Diwali all about?”. Only thing I knew is that we bought new clothes, we had alot of foods and also lights all over the house. I told them that I know it’s not to celebrate our new year.

So feeling all confused I decided to google the answer and Uncle Wiki replied below. Actually when I read the article, it really confused me, so I rather summarise the whole thing Generic Cialis Super Active Online Pharmacy myself.

Diwali is popularly known as “Festival Of Lights” and is usually a 5 day event. But here in Malaysia only 1 day is declared as a holiday. The word Diwali is derived from Deepavali which basically means “row of lights” in sanskrit. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. During Diwali, all the celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.

Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshman, from his fourteen-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with oil lamps and burst firecrackers.

At my place, we had a dinner the night before and Invited all family and friends. We practically ate and partied until late morning, 5am or so. Had a short nap and woke up again for the morning prayers (which is suppose to be before sunrise, unfortunately all woke up late).

A banana leaf is placed on the ground where all the prayer things are displayed along with some of the clothes and cookies. Each take turn with the prayer. Dad as the leader of the house starts by breaking a coconut. The children will then fall on the parents legs to ask for their blessings and in return we also receive money packets. On Diwali, we went to our friends house in Seremban.

I regred for not taking more photographs of the food that my mum diligently prepared and also the crowd that came to the house. I guess we were all too busy eating and enjoying ourselves :) .
