Food at Kuching Sarawak Borneo Malaysia
Kuching Sarawak is one of the heavens for food in Malaysia. You’ll get all sort of variety of delicious local Malaysian dishes. During my trip to Kuching Sarawak, I got really carried away and bloated myself with all sort of food. Below is a short list of some of the food that I tried and recommend that you do too. They can be commonly available anywhere in Kuching town, but some of the dishes are only best if consumed at the recommended outlets.
TopSpot Seafood Food Court
This is the first place that you’ll have to visit for fresh and tasty seafood dishes. There are many stalls available here, but I and many other travel writers would recommend that you feast at ABC Seafood Restaurant. 2 must try dishes that you don’t usually get in other parts of Malaysia is the Midin (a wild fern dish) and Umai (a jellyfish and fish dish). Price is generally cheap here when compared to other seafood restaurants.
Premier 101 Kuching Sarawak
It took me a few days to find this night hangout area. This is the gateway to the food heaven in Kuching Sarawak. Roughly at about 6pm onwards, this office and shoplot area converts to an open air food stalls area that serves anything from Malay, Chinese and Indian dishes. Some of the unique dishes that I tried here is their Fried Durians, Pork Satay and Fried Burgers.
The Junk Kuching Sarawak
Simply named The Junk, a hangout place for a lot of foreign guest. They are famous for their western dishes and if you’re there with a bunch of friends do try their Fisherman’s Basket. The Junk is placed in the middle of a row of old shop houses on Wayang Street near the Kuching city center. It is of walking distant from most of the hotels there. The unique thing about the Junk Restaurant is that at night, there is a Karaoke Lounge and a Bar at the back of the restaurant and they are open till late. There is a pool table at the bar too.
Sarawak Laksa
Unlike the Assam Laksa and Penang Laksa, the Sarawak Laksa has a taste of it’s own. Both sourish and spicy at the same time with a curry like zest to it give this dish a in my must try food in Sarawak. They are usually served in the morning as early as 6am so you’ll have to be early to get a good bowl. I tried the Sarawak Laksa at 2 spots, the tastier one was at Green Hill Corner Restaurant and the other was at the Sarawak Cultural Village.
Kuching Kolo Mee
Kolo Mee comes from the Hokkien Chinese culture and is quite a famous dish in Kuching Sarawak. You may want to try them at multiple stalls because they taste quite different. Basically Kolo Mee consist of Egg noodles that are flash-boiled, then classically served with crushed garlic and shallot, minced pork or beef and white vinegar. Some of them come with sliced barbecue pork known as char siu or beef. Some of the stalls in Kuching serves the Kolo Mee with a pork soup that contains pork parts.
Kuching Tomato Mee (Tomato Noodle)
This is another unique dish that I’ve yet to see in Peninsular Malaysia. The Tomato Noodle is basically a crispy deep fried noodles or ricecake strips served with tomato sauce, vegetables, and chicken. One place that you can have this dish is at Aroma Cafe on Jalan Tabuan. The Aroma Cafe have been featured on many food television programmes and is a chillout spot for famous artist.
Ayam Pansuh Sarawak (Chicken Pansuh Sarawak)
Ayam Pansuh is a dish that is widely available here in Sarawak and is basically chicken cooked in a bamboo with water, seasonings and tapioca leaf which later becomes a soupy dish. This dish is famous with the Iban and Bidayuh tribes here in Sarawak. The tapioca leaf can be hard to consume and do taste a little bitter.
This is just a condensed list of the food that you must try during your short trip to Kuching Sarawak. There are many other interesting dishes that are not mentioned here because I’ve yet to try them. Will probably update this post on my next trip to Kuching.

You missed Kueh Chap, another food famous in Kuching (: Man, I miss food back at home even more now.
Thats plenty different types of food you have shared. Having been to Sarawak before, I have tried some of them. You sure the first veg is known as midin, what I know is its called Mirin, This is so popular over there and almost found in any shops.
so many ppl blog bout Kuching recently, guess I have to consider bout it for my next trip! ^^
Nice one! hehe. But not all visitors can accept the food. Umai, belacan bee hoon, pansuh, ka chang ma (herbs chicken), cincaluk and many exotic food that not all are adventurous to try.
The Junk is not worth going to. Over priced and quality has gone down since its heyday.
I think this is a pretty definitive list for Kuching. I would be especially keen to try the Sarawak laksa.
[...] is not only famous for their Sarawak Food and great destination in the day time, but they are also filled with fun places to chill at night. [...]
