Martabak Palembang Indonesia

I realised that while walking around Palembang city, the famous work Martabak can be seen everywhere. First thought was, it must be a version of our Malaysian famous Murtabak where with a Roti Canai base, all sort of meat , beef, chicken or mutton mixed with a couple of eggs, onions, salt and other spices.

Everything in Palembang starts very early, the sun is up probably around 6am, sometimes earlier. By 8am, the road is already filled with honking sounds of cars and ramming motorcycles. And everything ends as early as 6pm, as the sun says goodbye. So life here if I were to compare it so somewhere in Malaysia, I would say it’s a lot similar to Sabah.

So with that being said, one morning as we woke up at 6am, and left the hotel by 7am, we came accross a stall that served only Martabak and super strong coffee. We had to give it a try and being foreigners, looking like Bollywood actors, the locals were kind enough to clear a space for us. We ordered our Martabaks and it only took them about 10 minutes to prepare it.

Martabak Palembang is actually a sort of roti canai based dough with an egg in it. It’s served hot so it’s extra delicious with a dhal like curry. It’s about 10 centimeters thick. They cost Rp8,000 per piece and if I convert that to Ringgit Malaysia, they would be only RM2.50 each.

When I told them that in Malaysia we have something similar but we call it Murtabak and we have them with Chicken and Mutton, they said that in Palembang, not many can afford such fancy food, so they just do them with eggs.

I guess we managed to find where they kept the goats, Martabak Special anyone?
