Photo Of The Day: Melanau Tall House, Sarawak Cultural Village Kuching
It’s been quite some time since I posted the photo of the day and today I was quite inspired about the photograph that I took during my trip to Kuching Sarawak. Other than their famous Semenggoh Wildlife Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and Jong’s Crocodile Farm, you may want to also visit the Sarawak Cultural Village at Damai Beach area. It is said to be one of the most exquisite heritage living museum in Malaysia.
The photo of the day is no other than the Tall Melanau House also known as Rumah Melanau in Malay. This is where the Melanau tribe stays which consist of roughly 6% of the population in Sarawak. The Melanau Tall House stands 40 feet above ground and you’ll be amazed at how they managed to built this huge structure with no modern tooks. The pillings are done with only coconut tree trunks, the floor with bamboo sticks, roof made of coconut leafs and the stairways are carved out of coconut trunks.
I personally had a chance to visit the living museum where about 150 people lives in at the Sarawak Cultural Village and experience first hand how solid and fantastic the Melanau tall house was. Climbing up the steep coconut trunk stairs was a feat, going up was a challenge and coming back down was not easier either.

Besides the Melanau race, many other ethnic groups of people can be found at the Sarawak Cultural Village where one can get to know their interesting cultures, languages spoken, and the natives dancing skills. The venue is a great visiting spot for many foreigners who ever come to Sarawak.
I missed this place and maybe my next round in Sarawak, on my list to see.
