Sarawak Layered Cake (Kek Lapis Sarawak), Kuching

Kek Lapis Sarawak is a layered cake that is famous in the Sarawak state in Borneo Malaysia. It was initially presented in cultural and religious events such as the Hari Raya, Christmas and Deepavali. Sooner it became on of the most wanted cakes for cake lovers. The origin of the Sarawak Layered Cake is Indonesia where it is known as Kek Lapis Surabaya and many other similar names. In Malaysia is is widely known as Kek Lapis Sarawak, Kek Lapis Moden Sarawak, Kek Sarawak or simply Kek Lapis (Layered Cake).

During my trip to Kuching Sarawak, this special Sarawak Layered Cake were available everywhere, but I was told that the good ones are accross the Kuching River near the Waterfront area opposite Majestic Riverview Hotel. You’ll need to use a Sampan (Small boat) to cross the rived which cost RM0.50 (USD0.15). As you reach the river bank, continue walking ahead and notice a purple color shop on your right hand side. This is actually a house that is converted slightly to a Sarawak Cake shop by the name @Yath Sarawak Layered Cake. From here, you’ll be able to see the Astana which is a Palace and the Fort Margherita.

The came here ranges from RM8 right up to RM13 depending on the flavour. They are generally 500grams each and come with multi flavor as well as design. There are the cakes with ordinary layers and cakes with patterns, motifs, or shapes.

The best part about the Kek Lapis Sarawak stall opposite the river is that you get to taste any flavors that you like before purchasing them. I practically tried all their flavors and bought 15 sets myself.

  2. The best layer cakes are moist, not dry – indicating the use of butter instead of margarine. They are totally sublime.
