Sugar Consumption in Malaysia
Posted in Everyday Life, Mind Bogglers on 05/07/2010 10:35 am byI remember during my school days the government used to air on the television some advertisements regarding the importance of controlling your sugar consumption. They then also mentioned that the daily recommendation for sugar intake is 8 tea spoons per day. We were not suppose to exceed this quantity. I also found out that by drinking one can of Coke, it contains 8 tea spoons daily limit.
This morning I received an email with a list of items that Malaysian consume on a daily basis with the number of sugar content in them. I was shocked to know that the average Malaysia consumes at least 26 tea spoons of sugar on a daily basis. And that we were also the 8th Highest sugar user in the World. No wonder Robert Kuok, the Sugar King is so rich.
The Malaysian govenrment are currently running campaigns to reduce the comsumptions for sugar in Malaysia. You can see that many drinks now comes with “Lesser Sugar”, or “No Sugar Added”. These are sort of drinks that we should opt for. Every morning I take a bottle of green tea that is branded Pokka, not realising that there’s at least 8 teaspoons of sugar in it. I will be stopping this drink tomorrow onwards and probably opt for No Added Sugar Orange Juice by Marigold.
Anyway, I’ve got a chart at the bottom to show us Malaysians what is the sugar content of our regular everyday drinks that we consume. My grandmother once mentioned that instead of using white sugar in our coffee or tea, we should use brown sugar instead which is healthier, not so sure how true this is. I hope this knowledge will be taken seriously and that all of us reduce the intake of sugar and live a healthier life.
